I have a lot of experience with the other three “Euro style” cargo vans (Transit, Sprinter, Nissan NV) but this is my first time in a Promaster. Initial impression: Mergio, you got a lot of splaining to do

On the FCA-TV (cooking shows and FCA infomercials) that plays in the service department at the dealer where I get Meepster serviced, the big selling point for the Promaster is that it’s FWD.

That’s it.

That’s literally it. They show it going up a steep, short hill faster than Ford Transit next to it.

I hate the NV from a fleet manager point of view, haven’t dealt with the new Transit but one of our other cities has been having transmission problems, and the Sprinter was too large for our needs. I’ll be driving a new Promaster at my new job. I like them but the seating position is weird.

seems like you might not be doing that much work after all.

The Express and Econoline will always be infinitely better and more reliable.

Seating position is terrible, and at my height the spot where the passenger A pillar meets the roof creates a massive visibility obstruction at intersections if the road has any crown to it

I’ll agree with reliability, but those two are worse than the Transit and Sprinter in every other way.

Has the plastic trim around the door window that blocks visibility got really annoying yet? The heater fan has a 50/50 chance of working. The manual ones also have the worst gearchange out there, but that’s not relevant to the US.

The only selling point is the cheapness.

If so, I wonder why neither has ever been sold where I am?

But Transits are usually fwd (you can get 4wd and rwd ones).

It’s one of the vehicles that might cause me to question the value of my existence were I ever to own one. I loathe them.

In the US, they’re all RWD. So is the Metris.

Is the Nissan NV really a Euro-type van tho? I thought the full size NV2500/3500 was more the old-school American V8 van concept but actually done right. Plus, it has a hood that the whole engine can fit under! Just too bad there’s no NV1500

Isn’t the Promaster/Ducato FWD?

The NV kinda sits in the middle, I lump it more towards the Euro side due to the better handling and the high roof option

All the vans are Euro style now. The Express is the last holdout for the traditional American van.

That’s true about the bigger NVs but the NV200 a.k.a. Chevy City Express is pretty similar in execution to stuff like the Transit Connect.

The Met...what?

(Googles)

Oh, Vito. Not much good I’m told, but the brochure tells me I could have the same fwd/rwd/4wd as the Transit should the urge take me.

Depends on the Nissan. The NV200 is sold all over the world under quite the variety of names. Whether you call it a Euro type van depends on how you define a van I suppose. There’s also the rather more common (near me, anyway) NV300 which is really a Renault and is made by them in France.

Oh, absolutely. They’re basically 30 year old designs stretched on.
